Sometimes, shapes which are not parts of a single form are spread throughout the composition. Some paintings, like those of one joan, contain shapes in a variety a of termotations across the picture plane. They are often distinguish by color or textural areas and unified by lines drawn on the surface. Between the shapes of figures are areas which are not occupied by any form. These areas are called negative shapes. In painting, these spaces can be as important as the shapes themselves.
